Caring for Your Handcrafted Serving Boards or Coasters

Daily Use

  • Cutting boards are food-safe and can be used on both sides (unless the board has optional feet attached)
  • Coasters are fine under hot mugs (up to 90 °C) and cold drinks.

Cleaning (do this every time)

  1. Wash by hand with warm water and mild dish soap.
  2. Use a sponge or soft cloth – never steel wool or scourers.
  3. Rinse well and stand upright to dry completely (do not soak or leave in water).
  4. Never put boards or coasters in the dishwasher.

Monthly Maintenance – Food-Grade Mineral Oil

  1. Once fully dry, wipe the entire surface (including edges) with food-grade mineral oil or our Cambridge Crafter Board Butter.
  2. Let it soak in for 10–15 minutes (or overnight for very dry wood).
  3. Wipe off excess with a clean cloth. This prevents cracking, keeps the wood hydrated and enhances the natural grain.

Extra Protection (optional but recommended every 3–6 months)

After oiling, apply a very thin layer of our Board Butter (beeswax + mineral oil blend) and buff lightly. This gives a satin water-repellent finish.

Things to Avoid

  • Prolonged soaking or submersion
  • Dishwasher, microwave, or oven
  • Direct heat sources (hot pans straight from the hob)
  • Bleach or harsh chemicals

Stain or Odour Removal

Rub with coarse salt + half a lemon, leave 5 minutes, rinse and oil afterwards.
